Why a Big Media Name Does Not Always Mean the Same Type of Placement in China
Why overseas brands should evaluate the actual domain and page type behind a Chinese media placement instead of relying only on the media brand name.
One of the easiest mistakes in Chinese media buying is assuming that a familiar media name always means the same type of placement.
A media brand can have multiple publishing layers
There may be a main news site, regional channels, content accounts, app pages, special projects and other publishing environments connected to the same brand.
Main-site and account-based content are not automatically equivalent
Both may be publicly accessible, but they can differ in editorial process, URL structure, visibility and how search engines display the source.
Regional coverage is not national coverage
A regional page can be useful when the announcement is locally relevant. It should simply be described accurately rather than being presented as identical to a national main-site placement.
Recommendation is different from publication
A homepage or app recommendation can be temporary. The article itself may remain live after the recommendation disappears. These are two separate deliverables.
The actual domain matters
Before paying, check where the final page will live and whether the URL can be verified publicly.
Five questions to ask
- What is the exact domain?
- What type of page will be published?
- Is the page publicly accessible?
- Is any recommendation claim independently verifiable?
- Can I see a recent comparable example?
Do not ask only “Which media brand is this?” Ask “What type of placement am I actually getting?”
